🎻 The History Behind the Fleadh
The Fleadh Cheoil (Festival of Music) began in 1951 in Mullingar, created by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann to safeguard Irish traditional music at a time when it was fading from the mainstream. That first gathering planted the seed of a cultural revival.
Today, the Fleadh has grown into a worldwide phenomenon — a week-long celebration of Irish music, song, dance, and heritage. Each year, a new host town takes the reins, bringing local flavour and hospitality to an event that draws hundreds of thousands from Ireland and beyond.
The Fleadh is about more than competitions. It’s about connection — generations passing down tunes, neighbours turning into session partners, and entire communities pulsing with rhythm and soul.
